During the past year I have been sifting through several boxes of Squires material in the special collections section of the Newman Library.  Here I not only learned much about the history of Squires during its seventy five year lifespan on the VT campus, but also about the university, the student body, and the town of Blacksburg.

Some of the information I've stumbled upon was outside of the scope of the exhibit, but was no less fascinating.  For instance,  I read about the university opening in 1872, and then "waiting" for its first student to stroll in.
The now legendary, William Addison Caldwell

is honored in a bronze sculputure created by local artist Larry Bechtle on the VT Campus near Torgerson Hall.

Anyhow, this is a good example of how I was entirely distracted during this research because I kept running into interesting facts all along the way that didn't necessarily pertain to the 75 years I was creating an exhibit, for...but had they not happened, perhaps things may have been different today.

I'll write more later.
