Inspired by the March on Washington

If we walked one mile a day
For fifty years
Where would we be as a world?
Would 300 million children no longer go to bed hungry?
Would 796 million more adults finally find joy in reading?
Would political prisoners around the world experience the freedom of expression?

If we walked one mile a day
For fifty years
Where would we be as a Nation?
Would 46 million Americans rise high and far from the poverty line?
Would 3 million people finally say Home Sweet Home?
Would our leaders be celebrated for their commitment to justice for all?

If we walked one mile a day
For fifty years
Where would we be as a community?
Would we truly know our neighbors?
Would our doors be open to welcome strangers?
Would our children feel safe and secure?

If we walked one mile a day
For fifty years
Where would I be as a person?
Would I see myself worthy—and others the same way?
Would I see myself as part of the world community?
Would I have the strength and conviction to walk another 50 years?
