From Miriam

Curator's Note:  On a weekly basis I have conversations with students about how to make their future in the arts work. The following letter is from an area high school student who has played cello in Perspective Gallery during our receptions on several occassions. In addition to being a great young musician, she is also an excellent visual artist.

As an organization that supports artistic efforts I feel this blog is an appropriate venue to share insightful, hard-working, efforts at being an artist.  Going into huge debt to become an artist is often counter-intuitive.  How does a young artist support their dream, and pay for it?  Here is Miriam's story.
  -Robin Boucher

After spending fourteen years studying cello at home and several of my high-school years traveling to pursue my musical education both in the U.S. and in Europe, I have auditioned for – and been accepted to – the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London!

This is a great honor and an extraordinary opportunity! Now I just have to find a way to pay for it...

If I can raise half of one years' tuition by the end of April '13 I will be eligible for "top-up" funding from the RCM, where the school would cover the other half of my tuition fees for '13/'14. My goal is to raise $20,000. In addition to online efforts, I am raising money on my own through competitions, by performing professionally every chance I get, and with the assistance of generous benefactors. I am fortunate to have time to devote to this award-matching project right now, but I won't be able to succeed without substantial help.

Thank you!
