Perspective Gallery presents Emotive, an exhibit which represents fifty years of artwork from photojournalist and photographer Marino Colmano.  Colmano’s photography is driven by his desire to create and capture emotional content in his art. Colmano takes on the role of the voyeur, often capturing poignant moments that exist within the humdrum routine of everyday life, and creating nostalgic portraits of both people and place.

Colmano has won 30 international film festival awards throughout his ongoing career as a photographer, producer, director, and director of photography, including the Chicago International Film Festival’s Silver Hugo Award for his short film End of the Rainbow, which can be seen in Perspective Gallery through August 6, 2016.

Marino won the Silver Hugo Award in 1983 - the top award at the Chicago International Film Festival - for his short film End of the Rainbow. Based on a classic joke among musicians, the 15-minute musical drama depicts the life of a down-and-out jazz musician who struggles to remember the bridge to the song “Over the Rainbow.” Distraught after being heckled by his audience, he dives headfirst off his balcony only to hear the notes to his song in the siren of an ambulance.

Marino Colmano’s illustrious career ranges from commercial photographic arts, creating ads for companies like eHarmony to photographing iconic Hollywood stars such as Dustin Hoffman and Brooke Shields. His commercial work is something that he takes great pride in, as- in his words- “it is not often that an artist is able to successfully make their work commercial enough to support themselves solely through their art.” His work has spanned many different types of media, from print advertising to television and cinema.

Throughout his career Colmano has made live-action productions and promotional materials for studios like MGM, Universal Pictures, TriStar, Disney, and Warner Brothers, and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including 30 International Film Festival awards and 2 Telly awards.

Colmano worked as a photographer during the shooting of a PBS documentary called Life Without a look inside of San Quentin Prison. It was through his work on this documentary that Colmano was able to get his foot in the door of Hollywood. Photographs from this shoot can be seen in the Emotive exhibit.

Marino worked with Dustin Hoffman on the short film Straight Time: He Wrote It for Criminals, a documentary about the making of Hoffman’s film Straight Time. Colmano credits this documentary as an opening for his further artistic ventures in Tinseltown. Since then, he has worked with numerous stars and a wide variety of projects, including his time working on press for Oceans 11.

Colmano has directed and photographed many award winning films throughout his career. His films have been the recipient of numerous awards, among which include his most award winning film- Reservoirs of Strength: A Burn Recovery Film, a documentary film about burn rehabilitation and the indomitable strength of the human spirit. This film was the recipient of 10 awards.

Colmano’s most recent project is a 21-part documentary series about the proposed 330 mile long Mountain Valley Pipeline. The project follows the grassroots movement of local activists of the New River Valley area and their efforts to block the proposal. The documentary can be viewed on the Pipeline Documentary website and a “sneak preview” for the feature length film will be shown at Perspective Gallery at 7 p.m. on June 23.
